SISAL

Tanzania

Sisal, which is not indigenous to Africa, was introduced to Tanganiyaka (now Tanzania) from Mexico at the end of the 19th century. The leaf tissue of this plant yields hard, flexible fibres, which are suitable for making rope, cord matting, padding and upholstery.

Sisal accounts for two-thirds of world production of hard fibers and about three-quarters of sisal consumption is for agricultural twine.

Until the 1960s sisal was the leader in earning foreign exchange in Tanzania. The economic importance of sisal declined in the 1970s due to falls in world market prices caused by the introduction of synthetics as alternatives to sisal. Sisal is essentially an estate crop. There are about 82 estates in the country growing sisal.

Katani, a fairly new company that produces sisal has been trying new business models to assure the growth of the sisal economy. They have implemented what is known as an “outgrower scheme to maintain block farming and transform subsistence peasant farmers and farm labourers into commercial farmers and rural entrepreneurs.

Entire villages are dedicated to growing sisal. Although it is a promising trade it lacks vision for long-term farming. Most younger farmers do not know how to grow their own food. They become dependent on the international economy and instead of farming for their own substinence they farm for cash crops. The focus becomes export-oriented.

Since sisal is a cash crop, the land too also suffers from this short-term answer. Mono-cropping has proven to be bad for the soil and the bio-diversity of the earth

The sisal economy will continue to grow as experts find new ways to use the tough fiber. Technology has been depending on sisal for fiber-optics.
